Innovative Solutions for Flood Management
Background
UNESCO established a Chair in Integrated Flood Management and Water Resources (March 2024 - June 2028) at Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria under the leadership of the Chairholder, Professor O. D. Jimoh, who will contribute to advancing the strategy of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) (2022 - 2029) on key water priority areas.
Objectives
- Improve understanding of the hydrological system in the Niger Basin through research and publications.
- Raise awareness on flood and water resource management via a web-based portal.
- Develop a flood early warning system and a multi-hazard flood response strategy.
- Train water scientists and managers through postgraduate programs and workshops.
- Collaborate with UNESCO, other Chairs, and UNITWIN Networks on related initiatives.
